Center for Popular Music Staff
Paul F. Wells, Director of the Center, and Associate Professor of Music, holds an M.A. in Folklore & Mythology from the University of California at Los Angeles (1974) and a B.A. in Music from Clark University (1972). He came to MTSU in November, 1985, as the first head of the Center. His previous professional experience included positions as Staff Research Associate for the John Edwards Memorial Foundation at UCLA, and head of production, promotion and operations for CMH Records in Los Angeles. As director, Wells has guided the development of all aspects of the Center's collections and programs. He has published in numerous academic and popular journals, and has produced and annotated more than twenty albums. His research interests include American, Irish, Scottish, and Canadian fiddle music; the rural musics of the Southeastern United States; historically informed performance of early American music; and the history of rock and country music. Wells is a Past President of the Society for American Music and is Vice President/President-Elect of the Tennessee Folklore Society. He is also a member of the American Folklore Society, the Southeast Chapter of the Music Library Association, and the Association for Recorded Sound Collections. pfwells@mtsu.edu
Lucinda Cockrell, Coordinator of Research Collections, holds an M.A. in Museum Education from The College of William and Mary in Virginia and a B.S. in Historic Preservation from Middle Tennessee State University. She is also a Certified Archivist and a member of the Academy of Certified Archivists. Ms. Cockrell joined the Center in 2001 with 20 years experience in acquiring, preserving, curating, and interpreting historic materials. Her responsibilities include the day-to-day management of the Center’s library and archives, intellectual access systems, reference services, as well as the accessioning, processing, and documentation of the Center’s archival materials. She currently serves as the state of Tennessee’s Key Contact Representative for the Society of American Archivists and Secretary of the Society of Tennessee Archivists. lcockrel@mtsu.edu
Grover Baker, Librarian, holds an M.S. in Information Sciences from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He has also earned a Master of Church Music, with a second major in Conducting, from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and a B.M. in Church Music from Belmont University. Mr. Baker’s responsibilities include providing reference service to researchers using the Center’s collections, acquiring new books and materials for the Center’s Reading Room, and cataloging new books, rare books, and sound recordings. Mr. Baker joined the staff of the Center for Popular Music in January of 2006, having spent the previous ten years working in the music library of Belmont University. Additionally, he has served as Minister of Music and Church Pianist for churches in Tennessee and Kentucky. Mr. Baker is a member of the Music Library Association, the Southeast Chapter of the Music Library Association, and the American Library Association. gbaker@mtsu.edu
Martin Fisher, Manager of Recorded Media Collections, has a B.S. in Broadcast Communications with a minor in Music from the University of Tennessee at Martin. Martin joined the CPM staff in September of 2005 having accumulated and maintained a private collection of sound recordings for over 30 years and having 18 years experience in the field of television production with NewsChannel 5, WTVF in Nashville, Tennessee. Mr. Fisher also plays the trombone and is a self-taught fiddler who performs regularly with the Nashville Old Time String Band Association. His responsibilities include preserving, maintaining and augmenting the Center's sound recordings collection, assisting researchers in locating and obtaining copies of recordings, and conducting acoustical “wax” cylinder recording demonstrations as part of the Center's outreach program. Martin is also a member of and Advertising Manager for the Association for Recorded Sound Collections. wmfisher@mtsu.edu
Kym Stricklin, CPS, Executive Aide, holds a B.A. in Art History from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. She joined the CPM staff in June 2006. Previously, she was Secretary to the Dean of the School of Music and the Arts at Cumberland University in Lebanon, TN. Her responsibilities at the Center include managing office operations and providing administrative support to the director and other staff. Ms. Stricklin attained the Certified Professional Secretaries rating in 2007. kstrick@mtsu.edu
Amy Hunsberger, Serials Manager, received an Associates degree in Education from Aquinas College in 1986. Amy joined the CPM staff in April 2007. Her primary responsibility is the management of all serials held by the Center, including approximately 250 current subscriptions and over 1500 secondary titles. hunsberg@mtsu.edu
Christi Underdown, Cataloging Assistant, holds two Bachelor degrees in Journalism and English from Middle Tennessee State University and is currently pursuing a Master of Science degree in Information Sciences from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Ms. Underdown rejoined the Center's staff in August 2007, having previously worked from 2003 to 2005 as part of the team who digitized the Center's Kenneth S. Goldstein Collection of American Song Broadsides. She brings an additional four years of experience working in public and academic libraries outside of the Center. Presently, she assists with the cataloging of Reading Room and audio-visual materials, creates and updates records for rare books in the Center's Special Collections, as well as assisting with the provision of reference services for Center patrons. Her present personal interests in Special Collections and storytelling ties in with her past studies as a Middle Tennessee Symphony and MTSU Orchestra classic violinist, folk fiddler, and pianist, leading her now to be an active participant in the Nashville bardic community. She is also a member of the Tennessee Library Association and the Special Library Association, Southern Appalachian Chapter. underdow@mtsu.edu
