About John Edwards and the Foundation
At year's end, 1960, John Edwards met his untimely death near his home in Cremorne, Australia. For much of his adult life he devoted himself to studying various aspects of American culture documented by commercial phonograph records of folk music from the period 1923-1941. Though he never visited the United States, he established himself as one of the world's experts on the subject of this music. Through correspondence with early recording artists, record company personnel, and fellow enthusiasts he amassed an important body of material in this field of study.
Shortly before his death, John Edwards prepared a will stating that he wanted his records, tapes, correspondence, photographs, biographical and discographical compilations, and related ephemeral information to be used for the furtherance of scholarly interests. To these ends his friends and associates formed the John Edwards Memorial Foundation. The Foundation is chartered as an educational non-profit corporation in the state of California and operates an archive and research facility in the Folklore & Mythology Center at the University of California, Los Angeles. Responsibility for handling back issues of JEMF Publications was passed to the Center for Popular Music at the time of its founding in 1985.
