Provenance:

These audio tapes are copies of a thirteen part radio series developed by Appalshop, Whitesburg, KY, and broadcast over public radio 1989-1990. The project was supported by grants from the Kentucky, North Carolina and Tennessee Humanities Council and the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and Public Policy.

Scope and Content:

The radio series "Southern Songbirds: The Women of Early Country Music and Old-Time Music" was developed by Appalshop to document women's role in the development of country music. The 13 half-hour broadcasts focus on the life stories of the Powers Family, Phyllis Marks, Jean Ritchie, Ola Belle Reed, Patsy Montana, Girls of the Golden West (Dolly and Millie Good), Martha Carson, Etta Baker, Ramona Jones, Wilma Lee Cooper, Matokie Slaughter, the Carter Family and Hazel Dickens.

The listener's guide which accompanies the series includes brief biographies of each performer and a list of suggested readings.

Audio visual materials are filed by tape number in the audio visual archives. Two copies of the listener's guide are filed by accession number with other manuscript groups.
