Plugging InThe History of Rock 'n' Roll, Episode 6: Plugging In

When Bob Dylan plugged in his guitar and began to play rock 'n' roll at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965, he nearly caused a riot. In the eyes of most adults — and every folk fan — rock 'n' roll was mindless music. Few people knew that Dylan's defiant gesture signaled a new kind of cultural revolution, symbolized by a creative new approach to popular music. Plugging In recounts how rock reinvented itself in the mid-'60s. We see vintage footage of folk-rock pioneers. Above all, we witness one of the most storied turning-points in rock history.

Discussion led by Dr. Felicia Miyakawa of MTSU's School of Music.
